Get Set 4 P.E. is a start-up founded by Kathryn Whittall and Natalie Richardson, two former P.E. teachers who recognised the increasing pressure placed on time-poor teachers to plan and deliver primary P.E. lessons. They have been delivering training to teachers since 2010, with the aim of maximising the impact of sports funding and giving teachers and schools the guidance and resource needed to deliver high quality, consistent lessons across the entire school, from Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), to Key Stage 1 (KS1) and Key Stage 2 (KS2).
In late 2017, it was announced that the UK government would increase the funding for primary PE and sport provision, doubling it from £160 million to £320 million a year, with the PE and Sport Premium allocated to individual primary schools increasing significantly. With this increased focus on the importance of delivering an effective sports education to primary school pupils comes even greater pressure to deliver effective P.E. lessons to pupils, as well as extended budget to invest in resources. Kathryn and Natalie have addressed this issue by launching the Get Set 4 P.E. platform.
We were briefed with building a platform which would give primary schools a clear and concise way of disseminating resources to give teachers access to high quality lessons plans, allowing them to manage their lessons and record progress across the academic year.
The platform had to hold a large amount of varied information, which needed to be organised in a concise and simple way. For teachers, the information needed to be in a format which was easy to use and make sure that it was not too time-consuming to set up relevant resources and then use them in a playground environment. For Get Set 4 P.E., the information needed to be easy to change and add to, so that content could evolve and grow as the syllabus changes. The system also needed to be able to manage multiple subscription options and allow Administrators to keep track of payment and system usage. The challenge was organising all the different types of resource available in a way which would be both easy to manage for the Get Set 4 P.E. administrators and for the school users accessing it.
We built a platform with a simple, intuitive self-service interface. After choosing from multiple package types, a school user can be easily on-boarded and start setting up the account systematically for use across the school and throughout the academic year. Classes and pupils can be added in bulk and each pupil has a separate profile with which to record individual progress notes. We built a drag-and-drop curriculum planner, which allows the school user to build the curriculum across the year, dragging different activity types into each term. Assessments on pupils can be added by class, based on the curriculum entered and once assessments have been entered, the results are automatically available on the pupil’s profile. Evidence for assessments – whether it’s notes, images or videos – can be added to a pupil’s profile and securely stored; once ready for use, the assessment profile can be printed straight from the platform. All information held on a school’s account is accessible to school account users only and the platform is ISO 27001:2013 and GDPR compliant.
A large amount of resources is available, organised intuitively by Key Stage and activity. To plan ahead, schools can access Schemes of Work and reference the Virtual P.E. Cupboard to check which equipment is needed for each activity. Teachers can access resources from a mobile device while on the playground, with easy to reference lesson plans containing Learning Objectives, Handy Hints, Success Criteria and step by step lesson formats with images and guidance throughout. Administrators are able to manage all site content, from lesson plans / Schemes of Work, to audio, video and written resources and monitoring subscription and payment information.
